Hi, I’m Maria Saracen from ArtfullyNourished.com, and in this video for About.com I’m going to introduce you to foods that are rich in probiotics.

Probiotics are Good Bacteria Fermented Food

Now as you’ve probably heard, probiotics are microorganisms or good bacteria that help us have a healthy digestive tract and in turn, a healthy body. Factors like Illness, stress and poor food choices can all negatively affect the amount of probiotics in our bodies, which is why it’s important to know which foods will help restore the balance.

In general, probiotics are found in fermented food. And this might sound a little off-putting at first, but fermented foods can actually be delicious.

Common Food Sources with Probiotics

Here’s a list of some that can easily be found in most grocery stores.

yogurt
buttermilk
kefir
These are all made from fermented animal milk, however, during the pasteurization process, all natural probiotcs are killed off. Fortunately, in many cases, they’re added back in but to be sure, you can always check labels for ingredients such as lactobacillis and --- which are probiotics.

Next, we have sauerkraut, which is an excellent source of probiotics. Sauerkraut is fermented cabbage and it tastes great on its own or as a topping.

Kim Chi, Miso, and Tempeh

The next few foods are a little bit more exotic but they can be found in many supermarkets.

Kim chi is a traditional Korean dish made of fermented cabbage and other vegetables with seasonings. It can be used as a condiment or mixed with rice, noodles or pretty much anything your heart desires.

Miso is a traditional Japanese seasoning made of fermented barley, rice and/or soybeans. It’s very salty, so it’s not something that you would eat on it’s own. Instead, miso is used to add flavor to food like soups, salad dressings and marinades.

Last on this list is tempeh, which is made from cooked and fermented soybeans. Tempeh has a mild, pleasant flavor which makes it a great addition to stir fries and salads and it’s even pretty tasty when eaten on its own.
