Top Tips for Maintaining Sobriety
In order to maintain sobriety you should
Hello, I am Dr. Ingrid Mathieu, I am a clinical psychologist. And today we will be discussing the top tips for maintaining sobriety for About.com.Particularly in early sobriety, it is a good idea to remove any mood or mind altering substances from your home – this includes cough medicine or mouth wash that contains alcohol. If you are in a 12-Step program, it is suggested that you find a home group. It’s also suggested that you work with a sponsor. A sponsor is someone who has more time than you in recovery And can take you through the twelve steps. And let people know who you are at the meetings – fellowship is not only a key to recovery, but a way to bring some fun back into your life now that you’re sober. So, if people are going out for coffee after a meeting – try to fight through your discomfort and go along for the ride. It’s suggested that you don’t hang out in the places you used to drink. This makes sense because like the old saying goes, if you hang out in the barbershop long enough – you are bound to get a haircut.Rediscover what you used to like to do before you started drinking, or find new hobbies to try. One of the features of alcoholism is that it hijacks the pleasure centers in the brain so people in recovery need to re-learn how to get normal pleasure from normal activities.Don’t isolate. People in recovery say that their head is like a bad neighborhood and they should never go there alone. Sharing your recovery with other sober members of AA is a fundamental part of the journey. Making outreach calls can be a large part of staying connected to other people in between meetings and a real life-saver when you’re triggered to drink. It’s important to cultivate healthy habits. Many people lost site of self-care while they were still in their addictions. Doing things like making your bed and doing the dishes not only make your home a more comfortable place to live, but it increases your sense of self-worth and esteem. The same is true of increasing your exercise and trying to eat healthfully. Most people will feel overwhelmed if they think about not drinking for the rest of their lives. They can tolerate the idea if it’s just for today. Sometimes you can break up that 24-hour period into one hour at a time. So it’s important to be where your feet are and in the present moment. If you find yourself engaging in a fantasy or euphoric recall of when you used to drink – remember to play the fantasy all the way through – in other words, remember what it was like after you drank. Remember the consequences: Remember the hangovers, the remorse, the damage you did to relationships while you were still drinking. This is Dr. Ingrid Mathieu, we have been discussing the top tips for maintaining sobriety for About.com.
