How to Stop Children From Nose Picking

Hi, I am Kathy Moore for About.com Parenting. Though I am sure I have told my kids a thousand times, they still consistently pick their noses. This program will help explain why kids pick their noses and what can be done to stop it.
Why Children Pick Their Noses

Kids who pick their noses the most tend to be children with allergies. The heavy flow of mucus and its crusting creates a feeling inside the nose that makes it difficult for kids to leave alone.

Some environmental issues also create the conditions for more nose picking, such as the lack of humidity in the house from your heating or cooling system. When your child's nasal passages are dry, he is much more likely to pick his nose.

Nose picking itself is not the issue, it is the germs that are left on the fingers and spread around the house. These germs are the quickest way to spread a cold or other virus.
Preventing Nose Picking

Keeping your child hydrated and decongested is the quickest way to stop nose picking. Offer lots of fluids and try a humidifier in the bedroom at night.

Ensuring that your child's hands are clean is also an important step. Sure kids hands cannot be clean all the time, but try a few extra supervised washings every day and keep his nails trimmed so that the dirt does not build up.

Teaching kids to use a handkerchief or tissue instead of his finger is an important lesson. Try giving him a fun hanky to carry in his pocket, and keep access to tissue easy and at his reach.

Helping your child learn how to blow his nose, too, helps in this process. Get down on his level and hold the cloth or tissue. After a good blow, make sure you demonstrate how to wipe out his nostrils.

Try modeling proper behavior by offering your child a tissue to use every time you take one for yourself. Rather than scolding your child try gently reminding him that nose picking is unhealthy and impolite. Try to focus your attention on the child, not the habit.

Though it is an unsightly behavior, nose picking is not a nervous habit, but a sign your child is uncomfortable. Luckily, with patience and consistent gentle reminders it can be corrected.
