Tips for Starting Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet

Like any other diet, South Beach takes a regimented approach to achieving weight loss and consists of three phases. Phase 1 can often be the toughest, prompting many to drop out. However, with some simple meal planning and knowledge of what foods work during this phase, your first two weeks on this diet will be a lot easier.

Lean Meats Are the Center of Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet

While oftentimes one is struck by how many different foods they're no longer allowed to eat on a diet, South Beach offers a great deal of choice, even during phase one. Lean meats are the centerpiece of many phase one meal options. Lean steaks and ground beef, chicken, turkey, ham, and virtually every type of fish and shellfish are ok to eat. Legumes and vegetables, like asparagus, green beans, and tomatoes are not only okay in phase one, but are encouraged.

Avoid Blood Sugar-Spiking Foods in Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet

You'll want to avoid certain plant-based foods that can spike your blood sugar however, such as carrots and potatoes. Eggs, lowfat cheeses, and dairy products are acceptable during phase one, as long as they're consumed in moderation.

Typical Breakfast in Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet

A typical South Beach breakfast consists of a protein and a vegetable serving: For example, scrambled eggs with bell peppers and a couple slices of Canadian bacon, served alongside a glass of vegetable juice. While it's not imperative, egg substitute is recommended.

Aside from commitment, the key to making it through any diet, especially phase one of South Beach, is knowledge. Knowing what foods are okay to eat during this phase, and having them readily available will ensure that your hunger doesn't hit a crisis point.
