Hi, I'm Dr. Mary Ann Block, Physician, Author and Medical Director of The Block Center in Dallas/Fort Worth, here for About.com.In this video I'll talk about the most common thyroid conditions. There are many different thyroid conditions, but the three most common thyroid problems are the underactive thyroid, the overactive thyroid, and thyroid nodules. If you have an underactive thyroid, your thyroid doesn't produce enough hormones. That's also called hypothyroidism. It's most often caused by a problem within the thyroid itself. There are several symptoms of an underactive thyroid. Because your body's metabolism slows down, you'll probably feel more tired, gain weight, and you could have problems with memory and concentration. But the opposite can also happen: when your thyroid produces too much hormones. That's called hyperthyroidism. That means your thyroid gland is too active, and that can cause your body's functions to speed up. When organs and processes in your body work faster, it can lead to weight loss, anxiety, and feeling nervous or irritable.Thyroid nodules are abnormal growths on your thyroid. They can happen anywhere on the gland, and you can have one or several. Sometimes you can feel a nodule, but most often they're hidden and difficult to feel. Most thyroid nodules don't cause any symptoms, but in severe cases, nodules can produce symptoms similar to either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. A small percentage of thyroid nodules is cancerous, so they always need to be evaluated by a doctor.
