Hello, I'm Dr. C. Andrew Schroeder for About.com.

Asthma Treatment

Asthma treatment is well-studied and should produce excellent control of your asthma symptoms. This means that asthma should not interfere with your normal daytime activites.

Treatments of adults and children are very similar. A proactive and preventative approach is very important. Good treatment includes controlling your environmental triggers and other conditions. Be able to recognize indoor and outdoor triggers. Do not forget to pay attention to inhaled irritants. Inhaled irritants are not always allergens. For example, this could be smoke or fumes. Pay attention to other conditions that make your asthma worse, for example, rhinitis.

Educate Yourself on Environmental Triggers

Education- Education includes knowing what you're environmental triggers are and knowing how to avoid them. You should understand what medicine to take and how to use and inhaler properly. You should know your personalized asthma action plan.

Asthma Medication

Medication- Your doctor will use a step-wise approach to prescribing medication for your asthma. The step-wise approach is based on increasing your medication until control is achieved and decreasing medications when possible. Inhalers come in the form of inhalers, nebulizers, pills and injections. Inhalers can either be short or long-acting. At each visit you and your doctor will reassess your asthma control and either step up or step down your asthma treatment.

I hope you've enjoyed our discussion of asthma treatments. I'm Dr. C. Andrew Schroeder for About.com. Thanks for watching.
