Hey everyone, David Knupp here for about.com. An important part of understanding statistics is knowing how to find the mean, median, and mode of a set of numbers. When many people think of median, mean, and mode, they often think of averages, which is a good way to think of them. So, today I’m going to show you how you can figure the mean, median and mode of a set of numbers using playing cards to demonstrate.
The Mean is Also Known as the Average

The mean is most commonly thought of as the average figure of a set of numbers. The easiest way to figure the mean is take all of your numbers, here I have a 10, a 2, a 7, an 8, and a 3, and add them all together, which gives us 30. Next, divide the sum, 30, by how many numbers you started out with. In my case, I had 5 numbers, so I will divide 30 by 5. This leaves me with 6. So, 6 is the mean of 10,2,7,8, and 3.
The Median Refers to the Middle Number

The median is the next statistical term I’ll demonstrate. To find the median of a set of numbers, I have 2, 9, 6, 4, and 7, you arrange the numbers in order from smallest to greatest. You then find the middle number. Which in my case is 6. If you have an even amount of numbers, like 2, 9, 8, 4, 7, and 5, you again put the numbers in order from greatest to smallest, but then you add the two middle numbers, 5 and 7, and then divide by 2. This gives you 6. 6 is the median of our numbers. The last term I’ll demonstrate is mode.
The Mode is the Most Reoccurring Number in a Set

To find the mode from a set of numbers, I have 5, 9, 7, 7, 6, 5, 2, 3, and 5, arrange then in order from smallest to largest and find the number that occurs more than the most in the sequence, in my case 5 is the mode. If you have a set of numbers that does not have a reoccurring number, then it has no mode. It is also possible for a there to be two modes in a set.
