I'm Lauren and today with About.com we're taking a look at CBS' hit sitcom "The Big Bang Theory."Created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, the comedy, filmed before a live audience follows four scientists working at CalTech. The likeable crew of geeks are considered some of the best and brightest in their field, but leave a lot to be desired when it comes to getting by in the real world. The series kicked off with roommates Leonard and Sheldon finding themselves in a social bind when Kaley Cuoco's beautiful, blonde wannabe actress-turned-waitress character, Penny, moved in across the hall. Leonard, played by Johnny Galecki,  immediately fell for Penny, launching an on-and-off relationship that's run the course of the show.In an Emmy-winning role, Jim Parsons plays Dr. Sheldon Cooper. A former child prodigy, Sheldon has a photographic memory and IQ of 187. He is known for his quirkiness, often causing problems with his general lack of social skills and all-around narcissism.
The guys are also joined by pal Howard Wolowitz, a wannabe Don Juan who, for most of the series, has lived at home with his mother. Rounding out the group is astrophysicist Raj Koothrappali, who finds himself incapable of talking to women, including Penny, without a drink in hand. The show is just as much about science as it is about relationships. Viewers get to see Sheldon attempt to prove string theory at the North Pole, Raj discover a planet, Wolowitz binvent a ‘space toilet' for use at the International Space Station and Leonard working in experimental physics, primarily with lasers.
"The Big Bang Theory" is also no stranger to celebrity cameos. Well, scientific celebrity cameos. Sci-fi stars, like ‘Star Trek''s Leonard Nimoy, and award-winning, real-life scientists, including Stephen Hawking, have made appearances.
And the addition of Mayim Bialik as Amy to the cast only upped the show's science cred. The actress holds, in real life, a Ph.D. in Neuroscience.
All these elements make the show a ratings darling. In fall 2012, it was earning the top ratings spot on Thursday nights -- one night, for example, fetched 15.4 million viewers. And not only has Jim Parsons picked up those Emmys for the show, two in fact. "The Big Bang Theory" has received many additional accolades. The sitcom has been nominated for more than 50 major awards, and won best comedy awards at the Golden Globes and the People's Choice Awards.
"The Big Bang Theory" has been picked up through the 2014 TV season. You can watch the current sixth season Thursdays on CBS. Thanks for watching! For more information be sure to check out About.com.
