Kay Panabaker – Fame

Tell me who you play in Fame.
Kay Panabaker: "I play Jenny who is a singer and an actress, but she struggles with confidence. She's kind of the ingénue, the underdog of the film. You really root for her and are looking for her to do her best and come out on top."

How tough is it for you to play someone struggling, who doesn't have the confidence, because you are an actress so you must have confidence in your abilities?

Kay Panabaker: "I have confidence, but it's not cocky. But it's so easy in this business to get torn down, to have those struggles, so it's so easy to relate to her because there are things that I've struggled with. Maybe not necessarily artistically with the acting, but I've struggled with other things and so you know that uncomfortableness."

How important is it to you that musicals are coming back, that young people are actually getting into musicals?

Kay Panabaker: "I love it, and especially because ours is very gritty. It shows the darker side to it. I'm excited for people to see it and appreciate it for a musical. And for us it's not so much musical but it's got like great music, great dance pieces. It's really top notch. I'm really impressed."

How tough is it to star in an ensemble piece, because this is a huge cast, and not get lost in that?

Kay Panabaker: "Everybody has their own strengths and weaknesses and so we all play up to that. Like, I've been in this industry for many years now and not only just that, I mean a lot of them have been in the industry but I've been able to support myself. It's a pretty big difference. I also went to college, which a lot of people didn't go to. I graduated from UCLA [at] 17. That's my claim to fame. That's what I'm most proud of."

People who saw the original movie and this one, is there a lot of [similarities] between the two or does this one stand on its own and it's totally different?

Kay Panabaker: "This one stands on its own. I mean, those who remember the other film can appreciate this one because it's got that same heart and the same passion and the struggle. It's just different characters, different storyline, a little bit more modern but it's the same way."
