Josh Peck Interview - The Wackness
In Ice Age 3 Josh Peck's character is the _____________ of Queen Latifah's character.
Josh Peck: "I mean I kind of had to battle it out against the usual suspects, you know? It was sort of no-holds barred. Maybe because I was just a white boy, hip-hop head from New York, like the director, it gave me a little bit of an edge."
It's an interesting role and such a good character. Did you do a lot of improv or was this so tightly scripted that you had to stick to that?
Josh Peck: "I think it's important to stay as true to the material as possible only because the writers right it, they hold it dear like it was Shakespeare. Not to mention the fact that it has its own rhythm on the page. But inevitably if you can be open to those sort of organic accidents that happen, then it allows you to have that great improv-type flavor, I guess."
How was it working with Ben Kingsley?
Josh Peck: "Oh, he's my idol. I just love him. he's my favorite actor, even way before I got the movie which is like they had to consult my IMDB page to make sure that was true so I wasn't like lying to just get the part, you know what I'm saying? Which I wouldn't put it past myself – I'm very capable of doing such things. But inevitably it just happened that I got to start at the top, so I peaked. There's nowhere to go."
What grabbed you about it?
Josh Peck: "I just thought it was an honest story and it was a movie that I would like to see, you know? So I did Drake & Josh for so long and it sort of made me who I am, and I've grown up on that show. So now at an age – I was 20 when we made the movie – it is a movie I wanted to see."
You didn't know any characters like this though, did you?
Josh Peck: "No, not in the least. I'd meet a couple characters here and there but I think a well-lived life you run into a couple of people that are into street pharmaceuticals."
But you didn't base this on anyone that you knew in particular?
Josh Peck: "No. It was a gumbo of people."
What are you working on now?
Josh Peck: "I've got Ice Age 3 coming out. I have a voice in that. Otherwise, I'm just chillin'."
How was it getting back to Ice Age?
Josh Peck: "It was good. I play Queen Latifah's little brother so that's like the part I was born to play, you know?"
Yeah, exactly. You look just like her little brother in real life.
Josh Peck: "Thank you. What an honor. You are a sweetheart. Thank you. Any resemblance I have toward the Queen I'm honored for it to be acknowledged."
Anything else you've got going?
Josh Peck: "No. I'm just looking for cool material that I like."
How tough is that?
Josh Peck: "It's difficult. It's kind of a crazy period. I know a lot of actors, my friends that are my age are sort of a little bit chomping at the bit. But I think inevitably too much sun brings about a desert. You get a little rain and then it will rebuild and some great stuff will happen."
That's a good attitude.
Josh Peck: "Well, yeah. A lot of therapy paid for that attitude."
