Christina Applegate - 'Grace' in Hall Pass

What's in it for women in this film?

Christina Applegate: "What's in it for women? Well, the women have more fun in this film so there you go. My character, especially, has more fun in this movie."

What do you think of the concept of a hall pass?

Christina Applegate: "I thought, 'Well, this is bulls--t, isn't it now? That will never happen.' But, it's really funny and it really isn't about the result of a hall pass. It really is, at the end of this, realizing how in love they are with their partners and how they would never do anything to harm them. And it took stepping away from it for them to realize it unfortunately. But they do, so it really has a sweetness to it."

What was it like working with the Farrelly Brothers?

Christina Applegate: "They're fantastic. They make the set so much fun and light and good, and you don't even feel like you're working. So I really got paid to hang out for a couple months."

Did you get to do a lot of improv?

Christina Applegate: "No, in my stuff we didn't, you know. It was a little bit more matter-of-fact, my end of things. Not too much."

Has being a new mom changed your perspective? How has she changed your life?

Christina Applegate: "She's changed my life in the sense that I want to go home so badly right now I can't even stand it. And I will be - I'm leaving right after this. But I didn't know that you could love like that. My mother has told me that all these years, like, 'Wait until you're a mother and you'll see.' And you really don't know it until it happens. It's just unreal."

Carly Craig in Hall Pass

I heard at the junket that the Farrellys are calling this a chick flick, and I've seen it and I don't see the chick flick part. How do you see it as a chick flick?

Carly Craig: "I think it's a chick flick because of the fact that these guys, the relationship with their wives and how much they love their wives - and the love story that goes along with it. There's a huge part of the movie that's not a chick flick which is them on their hall pass trying to get other women, but I think the whole movie as a whole with what they end up with - which I won't tell you because it's a secret - I think it could be a chick flick in that way. But I would not call this movie a chick flick for sure. I wouldn't cal it that. I understand it, but I definitely wouldn't call it that."

We can't give anything away about your character, so what can you say?

Carly Craig: "I'll tell you this: I play Jason [Sudeikis'] hall pass and I'm the worst date you could ever think of - ever, ever, ever. The worst thing that you could ever think happens on a date happens to me. And whatever you're thinking of, it's worse than that."

I heard that what actually happens to you wasn't in the first script that went out.

Carly Craig: "Right."

Was it in your first script?

Carly Craig: "No. I didn't know that that was happening until I was on set. But, I guessed it. The first script I read didn't have that part in it at all, I went in for a different role. And then they called me for this role. They offered me this role - there was no audition. They said, 'There's this role we think you'd be great for.' I said, 'Okay,' so I flew out there. I had read something in the script about it, but what actually happened wasn't in that script. And I said, 'So, in the next scene, has she been drinking a lot?' He goes, 'You know what happens, right?' I said, 'Does she...?' And I guessed it - I won't say it, but I guessed it. He's like, 'Yes!' I had a feeling because that would be funnier anyway."

So you were so right for the role because you knew what was going to happen.

Carly Craig: "I said, 'It would be funnier if this happened.' He said, 'That is happening.' I'm like, 'Oh, okay, then this is great.'"

Did being directed by the Farrellys live up to your expectations?

Carly Craig: "Oh yeah, they're just fun, you know? You feel very free. In the movie I have a Rhode Island accent, which, by the way, I didn't know that until I got to Atlanta as well. In fact, I didn't know that until the second day I was shooting. The first day I was shooting I had all these other lines that were not in the Rhode Island accent, so I had to go back and ADR them in the Rhode Island accent. Never been to Rhode Island, don't know what they sound like. You know what I mean? But luckily East Coast was one that I could pick up a little easier. If they said, 'Now you're Irish,' or something, I would have been screwed. I would have had to figure it out. But the accent I think really helped to make the character who she was, and kind of kooky. She was fun for me."

I would imagine this is quite a stretch for you. Is it fun to do a character who is so different from yourself?

Carly Craig: "Oh absolutely. I loved it because I don't usually get cast for that. I write a lot of comedy myself and do videos for Funny or Die and stuff like that, but nothing like a character like this. I don't think I would normally have gotten cast for that but they had seen my videos for the last four years. So when this part came along after they wrote it, they were like, 'You're right for this. You have to do it,' so it was perfect."
