Land of the Lost - Danny McBride Interview
Danny McBride promises that the second series of Eastbound and Down will be even
Danny McBride: "Well, you know honestly, I'm not very athletic so just running is an action sequence to me. It's like, 'Really? We have to run from here to here?' But I persevered. I ate a lot of raw eggs and like trained a lot. No, I didn't do any of that. I just went for it. I just used all the sweatiness and being hot and out of shape and out of breath to add to the comedy of this film."
And speaking of adding to the comedy, you guys got to do a lot of improv?
Danny McBride: "Yeah. That was one of the things that kind of drew me to this project was that it was going to be like a comedy with a big scope and a big epic feel, but Brad [Silberling] was going to keep it light enough so that we could still improv and toss it up."
So did you watch the entire Land of the Lost series?
Danny McBride: "I did. I loved the series when I was a kid. And I was very freaked out by the Sleestaks and, oddly enough, by Chaka. He spooked me a lot. And it was good to face those fears in this movie. I had to face off with the Sleestaks. I had to sleep with my face facing Chaka's crotch. That was really facing my fears head on."
That was written in the script for you to face Chaka's crotch?
Danny McBride: "That was not improv. That was in there. I would not have thrown that touch in myself."
And Eastbound and Down, we're going to have a second season?
Danny McBride: "We are. We are working on right now. Hopefully it'll be out the beginning of next year. But yeah, Eastbound and Down series 2. It's going to be even darker and crazier."
How do you do that with all the movies that you're also in?
Danny McBride: "You just don't really sleep a lot. You just double time it. You work on the scripts in your trailer and then you go out and try to make up other funny lines."
Did I hear you just got cast in Hench?
Danny McBride: "In Hench, yeah. It's a project I'm writing with a buddy of mine, Shawn Harwell, who wrote on Eastbound and Down with us. And yeah, it's a superhero movie but focusing on the nameless, faceless henchman. But it's like what storm troopers do when they come home at night after work, you know?"
You don't have to be super in shape and be a super hero?
Danny McBride: "No, you just have to know how to follow orders. That's it."
How easy is it to work with Will Ferrell?
Danny McBride: "He's fantastic. He's a great guy. He's super nice. I had a blast working with him. It was a lot of fun."
And you're also doing on Your Highness?
Danny McBride: "Yes, I'm doing Your Highness this summer. It's with James Franco and Natalie Portman."
That's an incredible cast.
Danny McBride: "Yeah, and David Gordon Green who directed Pineapple Express is directing it so we should have a good time."
