Dwayne Johnson ('Agent 23')

You of course can do any type of action scene, but this was a little different. How tough was this to tackle?

Dwayne Johnson: "I would say really not that tough to tackle at all. That's a good point you brought up, and only because they're committed actors, you know, I was working with. Anne Hathaway, Steve Carell, they want to do all the action, want to do all their own stunts, any time you have actors who want to do that, then it's really, really easy."

And of course you do all your own stunts.

Dwayne Johnson: "I do, for the record, I do all my own stunts – every single one. Even when it's the back of my head and someone's like, 'That really doesn't look like Dwayne,' it's me. Even if he looks Caucasian, it's me. Even if it looks female, it's me."

Wow, you are versatile.

Dwayne Johnson: "I am. I am."

Bringing this series back to life, there's so many people who love it but there are people who know nothing about it. How tough was it as an actor to get that mix in there that you're playing to two different audiences really?

Dwayne Johnson: "I think it all comes down to material and I think it comes down to performances that are funny and entertaining. I think whether it was the TV show in the '60s or now, I think it still plays. It comes down to the material. We have great actors involved too who just wanted to give good, funny performances."

And you were a fan of the series?

Dwayne Johnson: "I wasn't. I didn't get it. I didn't think it was that funny at all. No, I'm only kidding. I was a big fan of the series, are you kidding me? What Mel Brooks created and Don Adams and Barbara Feldon, big, big fan."

And Shazam!?

Dwayne Johnson: "And Shazam!, yeah, very excited about that with Pete Segal. We're just waiting for it now. It's still being written. I know John August is writing away. He's an outstanding writer so fingers crossed it'll come in, everybody's schedules will work out, and we'll make a great movie."

Director Peter Segal

Is there going to be a Get Smart 2 and 3?

Peter Segal: "You know we'll see, opening weekend, we're not sure."

And you talked to Mel Brooks after it was all over and done with and he's seen the film?

Peter Segal: "Yeah, Mel saw it a few weeks ago and loved it so I was very relieved, very relieved."

Now this is like a prequel story for Maxwell Smart's character. Where would you take the next one?

Peter Segal: "I don't know. I'm thinking of one thing at a time. Let's see if they like this story. We have dreams, but I'm not sure we should even be thinking about it. I don't want to jinx anything."

What's happening with Shazam!?

Peter Segal: "Working on that hard, you know? Trying. John August is working on it. The strike kind of delayed us for a few months but we're back at it."

The Rock was saying he's really looking forward to it.

Peter Segal: "Yes, as Black Adam."

Is he a definite then? Can we say he's definite?

Peter Segal: "He's not 100… I mean, his deal has not been made. And you know, apparently he needs to be paid money so I don't know…"

Producer Charles Roven

You did kind of a prequel story in this. When did that come about?

Charles Roven: "Well, when we wanted to contemporize it and let's say reinvent it for today, we said, 'How can we best accomplish this?' Making an origination story was kind of the way to do that. You know, Maxwell Smart in our incarnation of Get Smart is a bit of a different character than Maxwell Smart was when it was played by Don Adams."

In what way?

Charles Roven: "Well, first of all he's never been an agent before, as you said. And Don played him kind of as a guy who while he was athletic in a certain kind of way, he really wasn't all that smart – even though he was called Maxwell Smart. Steve Carell and our idea was to have the character actually really be smart. In fact, he's so good at what he does, they don't want to lose him as an analyst and make him a field agent, although being a field agent is his lifelong dream. The circumstances give him the opportunity to be this field agent, and his enthusiasm for finally getting his dream, get him into a lot of trouble."

That makes sense. So then you don't have to be a fan of the original series to understand what's going on in this.

Charles Roven: "We think if you know the original series, you'll have fun with what we did with it. But if you don't know the original series at all, hopefully you'll have a hell of a good time."

Because it has Steve in it…

Charles Roven: "Because it has Steve and Dwayne and it has Anne Hathaway and Ken Davitian and Terence Stamp. But we have just a great cast who can be threatening and funny and do all the action. That's the other thing that the TV series could never do, the kind of action that we have in this action comedy. "
