Hi I'm Christine Hassler, I'm a Life Coach, Author and Speaker, here with About.com to talk to you about burnout: what it is and how to avoid it.So you may be suffering from burnout if you notice that you're always exhausted. Not just physically exhausted but emotionally exhausted as well. You may also find yourself irritable, more irritable than normal, snapping at people that you normally wouldn't snap at and being harder on yourself.Your immune system may be suffering, you may find yourself getting more colds, more sick than you normally do. And finally you may be retreating from the things that you really enjoy in your life because you just don't have time for them like spending quality time with family and friends or exercise or any of your hobbies. So if you can relate to any of these things, you probably are experiencing burnout. So now I'm going to share with you some reasons why burnout happens. The first is doing too much. Often times we put way too much on our plate, and think that we can handle it all, instead of just doing one thing at a time. The second is not honoring boundaries. Often times its very hard to say no, to our bosses, to our co-workers to the people that we love. But to take care of ourselves and avoid burnout we have to have boundaries in our life, and be able to know what we can handle and what we can't. And sometimes the most powerful and self-honoring response we can give is no.Another thing that causes burnout is getting really excited about some project and having a vision for something and getting so far ahead of yourself that you don't pace yourself. Often times excitement and drive and passion can create a sense of urgency. But it's important to remember to be patient and do things one step at a time, rather than thinking you have to jump in and do everything at once. So to get out of burnout, remember: do things one step at a time, take some things off your plate, find where you need to put up some boundaries, and honor them. Because when you take better care of yourself you'll be better for everyone else as well.
