Hi I'm Christine Hassler. I'm an Author, Life Coach and Speaker, here with you today on About.com and today I'm going to talk to you about how to manage your Type A traits. So I’m a recovering Type A person myself, and work with a lot of clients who are Type A.

5 Ways to Deal With Type A Traits

So I’m going to share with you 5 ways that I know really help us manage those Type A characteristics.

The first is to slow down. Type A people go way too fast - talk too fast, think too fast, drive too fast. So just notice yourself in your day take a breath, talk slower, even put a little sticky note on your odometer that says "slow down" reminding you to drive slower. You probably work at an accelerated pace. Just slow down a little bit - I promise you won’t miss anything.

The second is to shift your thinking. Type A people tend to have a really loud inner critic in their head constantly telling them what to do better, or what they’re doing wrong. So shift your thinking - criticize yourself less and acknowledge yourself more.

So next I want to tell you how to win at the "What if" game. Type A people do a lot of "What if" thinking: "What if I don't get this job?" or "What if I don't get this finished on time?", or "What if I don't meet my deadlines?" It creates a lot of worry, a lot of fear, a lot of stress. So if you're going to play the "What if" game, here's how you win at it. You follow "What if" by a positive statement. "What if I get everything done?", "What if the job interview goes great?", "What if I have plenty of time to meet that deadline?" It totally changes the way you play the "What if" game.

Next, keep a journal, even a notebook with you all day long. You see type A people live a lot in their heads, there’s a lot of thoughts flying around. But if you start journaling, that's a great way to manage all those thoughts that are stressing you out.

And finally, laugh. Don't take your life so seriously! Type A people could use a good belly laugh at least every day. When I was going through my Type A withdrawal, I would listen to comedy in my car, just to help lighten things up. So if you do identify as a Type A person, don't freak out about it. If there's anyone who can fix it, it's you.
