Hi, I'm Lauren Zima for About.com and today we're giving you a quick, easy overview of what wasn't a quick, easy birthday for one 16-year-old: we're talking about Molly Ringwald's character in the teen classic Sixteen Candles.

A Coming of Age Story

The rom-com teen flick is a coming-of-age story, literally, centering on high schooler Samantha, also known as Sam, played by Ringwald. It was written and directed by John Hughes and hit theaters in 1984.

Sixteen Candles Plot Overview

In it, Sam is down because her older sister, Ginny, is getting married, so her whole family seems to have forgotten her 16th birthday. Plus, as a sophomore, she doesn't feel popular and has a big crush on senior Jake. Sam heads to a school dance, where she stares at Jake from afar, and where she's stared at by freshman Ted, played by '80s darling Anthony Michael Hall.

After, it's a blowout party at Jake's house. Sam doesn't attend, but Ted does, and tells Jake Sam has been crushing on him. He's delighted and ditches his drunk girlfriend, who heads home with a happy Ted. The next day, Jake sweeps Sam off her feet post-wedding with a birthday cake and a kiss. It's the perfect romantic ending, and there's plenty of comedy thanks to subplots with Sam's grandparents and their foreign exchange student, Long Duk Dong.

Critical Acclaim

The movie was well received by critics and was fairly successful at the box office. Today, it often makes ‘best high school movie' ranking lists. Ringwald was just 15 at the time of filming, and went on to partner with Hughes in many movies; he considered her something of a muse.
