Photography Composition: Balance

Hi I'm Chris Davis for About.com.  Creating a sense of balance within a photograph is an interesting composition technique, however, there are a few ways to balance a shot, let's take a look.Balance in a photograph is easy to achieve with a little practice. Deciding what to balance may take a little more time. There are basically two types of balance in photography: symmetrical balance and asymmetrical balance.
Symmetrical balance is when one or more identical or similar subjects are placed evenly on either sides of a point, while asymmetrical balance is when one or more dissimilar subjects are placed on either side of a point.  Symmetrical balance is very easy to recognize, and the technique is simple to implement. However, the image will often feel flat or static, so unless this is the effect you are looking for, try asymmetrical balance. This technique is less obvious. Your subjects are not exactly the same and don't stand out as significantly. However, an asymmetrical image, composed properly, tends to be more appealing. Try placing your main subject off center. As you do, you may notice empty space. This can be ok, however, it may create a void in the image. To balance this emptiness, include another subject of lesser importance or further away to give equal weight to the composition. With practice you will get it.Another interesting element to the technique of balance is that you do not have to balance a physical item.  Good balance can be achieved by using the correct combination of colors, shapes, and areas of light and dark within the image as well.  As you experiment with the concept, consider looking at your subject from different viewpoints and angles to assist in composing a balanced image. And of course with the right subject you can rearrange elements with in the composition to your liking. As you experiment, try to avoid an unbalanced shot. This will occur If you place every element of interest in a photograph on one side, or as many beginners do, right in the center.  This tends to create an uninteresting image.
