Rebecca Murray from About.com Hollywood Movies at the North American premiere of Ocean's Thirteen.
Bernie Mac ('Frank Catton')

How are you doing?

Bernie Mac: "I smell that popcorn. I'm going to wash my hands – all these hands that I've been shaking – I'm going to sit down and I've got me some tea. I brought my own tea."

You brought your own?

Bernie Mac: "I brought my own tea and I'm going to sit down there and watch the movie…because I'm a movie man. I go to movies every weekend, me and my wife."

But you've seen this one before?

Bernie Mac: "No, I don't watch my movies."

You don't watch any of your movies?

Bernie Mac: "No. No, I'm not lying to you. I don't watch them."

Why?

Bernie Mac: "Well, I do everything from my heart and then I let it go. Just like stand-up. I do it from my heart. I let it go. When I put the mic in the hole, I'm done. People to me and say, 'I like that joke,' I don't even know what joke they're talking about. Or when I shoot a film, I don't watch dailies and stuff like that. All the guys go to the dailies and I meet them afterwards or something like that. But I don't want to see myself because I give you my heart. I prep myself. I study. I know what the character's about and I know what I want to bring it, and I'm a good listener. Then I listen to it, I let the director give me his input, and I take it from there. I give it to you and I know it's right. It's like a relationship. If I give you my best then I can walk away."

That makes sense. How easy is it to revisit a character you've done before if you don't really watch what you've done before, and you're feeling it from the heart each time?

Bernie Mac: "Well, once you know the character and you've got a hell of a director like [Steven] Soderbergh that constantly puts you in the mind of where the character might be going… I read the script two or three times and then I take my notes from the director. And then once again, once you sit at the table read and stuff like that, you find something else you can go [on]. And then once you shoot, I'm a good listener. I try to be a great listener. I try to listen so well. You never know, it's spontaneous. You can't lock yourself into anything because you never know what the next person might bring."

And you've also got Transformers coming up. Could you be in two bigger summer movies?

Bernie Mac: "Well, I mean, I'm fortunate. I really am. And that's how I look at it. When things come at you like that they're never planned. You can't plan good things like that. You just keep doing it and then the opportunity comes and then they blend and they mix it for themselves. That's what I'm talking about. You don't sit there and say, 'I'm going to do this, I'm going to do that. I'm going to be in this – two summer movies.' I didn't even plan. You couldn't even have planned it better. That's the way the cards fell and you just take advantage of it. I'm fortunate."
