Hi I'm Chris Davis for About.com.   Children are a fun and natural subject to photograph.  Let's take a look at a few techniques you can use to capture that special moment. Before you start shooting you may want to consider some camera setting options.  Using the aperture priority mode will give have some creative control over depth of field which is great while taking portraits and close up pictures. If this mode is not available on your camera look for a portrait mode it will give you a little of the blurred background effect.  Start with an aperture of f5.6.  This should put the background out of focus.  Make any necessary adjustments to your f-stop up and down as you go.  If the kids are on the move try using a shutter speed 1/200th of a second or faster. If the image is too dark try increasing your ISO or adjust the aperture up.  If you can't manual change the shutter speed look for a sport mode to help freeze your moving subject.Choosing between posing and candids is up to you.  Older children will respond well to posing and have the patience to sit as you make adjustments, however younger children tend to loose interest quickly.
Candid photos can be easier and just seem more natural.  By capturing children doing something they like to do they tend not to loose patience with the photography process because they aren't really paying attention to you.  As you are taking candids occasionally ask them to look at you.   This will give you the opportunity to get a quick smile in their environment.
Don't be afraid to change your camera angle.  First and foremost get down to their level.  When you are at eye level with children two things will occur.  You will capture some great moments because you have a whole new perspective allowing for a more intimate picture, and the kids will be at ease because they aren't constantly looking up at you.  Also get close.  The background can be important to establish setting, however, kids faces and expressions are what you want to capture.
Continue to change your angle.  Eye level is great, but try different camera locations.  Shooting high or low will continue to yield different feelings to your images.
Abstract shots are also great to try.  A child's feet at the beach, close ups of hands, facial features a foot on a bicycle peddle.  Simply choose the element you want to highlight and frame your image accordingly.

Most of all have fun.  If the kids see you being silly and having a good time than they will too.  And that's when you will capture the perfect shot.
