Davis, and I'm here today for About.com to show you how to simplify exponents.Remember, an exponent is an operation on numbers, variables, or functions. Let's see how we can simplify some exponents. Remember, the exponent is the part that lives on the top corner of your expression. To simplify the exponent in this case, we just have to multiply the powers; so, we have ten to the three times one-third. Well, three and one-third, they cancel to give you ten to the one, or just ten. We do the same thing here – we have y to the seven, times negative five. Multiply across we get y to the negative 35.Let's take a look at another example where the exponents are just a little bit more complicated. We do the same exact thing – we go ahead and multiply the powers, but this time we distribute the five into the y and the two. So we end up having pi to the five y, plus ten. We do the same thing with this bottom one – we multiply the powers and we distribute the four into the x and to the one. So we end up with e to the four x, plus four.Exponents play an important role in financial planning, predicting fish populations, and dating fossils.
