A Guide To Becoming A Teacher
Why is teaching English as a foreign language a good teaching opportunity?
Hi. I'm Suzie Butler and I work for Career Teachers education recruitment firm, based in London in the UK. I've been a teacher for the last ten years and now, I work with their training department to train all their teachers. In our other video about how to become a school teacher, we look specifically at the qualifications that you would need to work in a maintained school in the UK. But if you're just interested in teaching, there are a couple of other routes that don't require as much qualification. The first may be to do tutoring. Tutoring in the UK, really is working with children on a one-to-one basis. There are tutoring agencies available, but often people advertise privately or perhaps work with people they know. Tutoring normally works either in a home situation and you work one-to-one or perhaps in a small group with children. This tends to be subject specific. So, with perhaps younger children looking specifically at literacy and numeracy skills, as these are key parts of the primary curriculum, and for secondary, looking more at subject specific, especially for pupils heading towards examinations, whether they be at 16 or 18. Another option if you just want to teach, might be perhaps working with over-16s. And in the UK, our over-16s phase, at the moment, currently doesn't have as much jurisdiction. So, you can actually work in Further Education, as we call it, without any particular formal qualification other than a degree in your subject. So, there may be offerings and openings and that's something if you look on specific websites, they should outline what you would require for certain colleges. And perhaps another option for teaching is to teach English as a Foreign Language. It's a very popular option and it does offer lots of opportunities for travel. TEFL course or Teaching English as a Foreign Language course are widely available and it's usually best to do a college based course perhaps than an online one, to get a more formal qualification. And once you've obtained that, you can teach English anywhere in the world. And there are a few options of how to become a teacher. .
