What is a Standard Deviation?
The standard deviation is a measure of dispersion.
Hi, I'm Ben Owns - math educator here for About.com, to explain the standard deviation. The standard deviation is a measure of dispersion. Meaning, it's a number that's used to describe how spread ou the data are. In this case we have Set B, who's average is 72. To find how spread out the numbers are, we can use the standard deviation. In this case, the standard deviation is 4.52. This number can be used to find out how spread out the numbers are from 73. If the number is larger, it means the data is more far-flung. If the number is smaller, then the data are closer, huddled together. For more, check out education.About.com. Thanks for watching!
