Hi I’m Jaclyn Mullen from JaclynMullenMedia.com and you are watching About.com. Today I'm going to be referencing the Entrepreneur site from about.com to walk you through how to set up your LLC.

Know the Required Paperwork for an LLC Depending on the State

Alright let's get you started. Step one, you are going to want to go and visit your state’s Secretary of State website because you need to fill out the proper paperwork. Filing fees and paperwork are going to vary depending upon the state in which you live.

LLC Paperwork is Called Articles of Organization

Step two, you need to pick a name. They ask for it on the form. And the caveat here is that it must end with LLC.

Step three, fill out that paperwork, often referred to as Articles of Organization. Make sure to include the business name with the LLC, and please be sure to read the instructions. You want to make sure that you fill out every field possible on the form so that they don't send it back to you for incompletion.

Publish and Submit the LLC Articles of Organization

Step four, publishing your Articles of Organization to a local newspaper. Again, states will vary depending upon how long and what the costs are, but you will want to publish this information.

Step five, now that you have filled out your paperwork and your LLC is being published, you want to submit the Articles of Organization to your state, along with the appropriate filing fee. Again, be sure to check your state’s Secretary of State website so you know what the filing fee is.

Outline the Responsibilities of Your LLC

So you've done what you’ve needed to do as far is the state is concerned, but there is one other step. You will want to file an LLC operating agreement. What that's going to outline are the financial responsibilities and managerial responsibilities of the entity.

CPAs Ensure the LLC Paperwork is Filed Properly

And when all is said and done, I suggest you leverage the help of a CPA or an attorney. The benefits of working with a CPA or an attorney to file your LLC are that they do this pretty much every day. You want to spend your time marketing your business to potential customers and providing customer service to your existing customers. You also want to make sure there aren't any snafus in the filing process.

All in all, filing an LLC is a very exciting step for any business owner. I congratulate you and I wish you the best of luck. This is Jaclyn Mullen signing off from About.com. Thank you so much for tuning in.
