Hi, I'm Jen D'Amore for About.com, and this video is all about franchises. What is a franchise? When you think of franchises, the first thing that may pop into your head is fast food. They seem to be everywhere, and give you a consistent experience where ever you are. But franchises are not limited to fast food, and can be found in industries from exercise and fitness, to business consulting.A franchise delivers familiarity and consistency in price, product, and service to it's customers. A franchise is considered a "privilege" to represent an already successful business. Owning a franchise means you've been given the right to market a company's goods or services within a certain territory or location. It is more expensive to start a franchise than a mom and pop business, but you to enter with an already successful business model, and usually an already established customer base.Franchisees usually pay a large up front franchise fee, a royalty, and a marketing fee to the main organization. In return, they benefit from large scale marketing campaigns and branding they alone would not have the resources to generate. There are a few ways to become a franchisee, including opening and running a single unit, or location of a business, opening and overseeing a multi-unit franchise, becoming an area developer, essentially a larger multi-unit territorial area. And a master franchising, which lets you franchise out within a certain territory. You can start fresh or buy an existing franchise that someone else has already set up. There is a responsibility, as a franchisee, to maintain the consistency of the main business. Guidelines are laid out for everything, and deviation is discouraged. In fact, all changes usually need to be pre-approved by the main business.Being a part of a larger franchised organization can save a business owner a lot of time, and often comes with extensive training. A franchise let's you focus on running a business, rather than starting a business. It's laid out business model may be perfect for some, but may be too limited for others. While the initial costs may seem high at first, it is an investment that carries less risk.
