Creative Ways to Help Students Identify Number Values

Hi! I’m Samantha Lake for About.com and today I’m going to show you Creative Ways to Teach Students How to Count. We’re here at Count Me in Tutoring in Bedford Corners, NY.
Play Games to Teach Number Values

Children are very visual, so it helps to use everyday items when teaching them how to count. You can gather up items around your house or classroom such as buttons, pencils and paper clips. Put them in stacks and count them along with your child or students. You can also play "Go Fish" with a deck of playing cards. You should take out the face cards in order to simplify the game. Kids love playing games. This is a lot of fun and they will be learning at the same time. Using a toy telephone or an old disconnected cell phone and a telephone book, have your students pretend to call an order a pizza. Help your students read the numbers and press the numbers on the phone. You should pick out a few different places for your students to call, such as the florist or even their grandparents. It is very important to allow your students to use their imagination. This will help keep them interested and involved, making learning easier and quicker.
Construct a Counting Book for Young Students

Another creative way to teach counting is by making a counting book. You can purchase a blank book at an educational supply store or make your own with construction paper and a three-hole punch. Making the books will give the students a sense of accomplishment and get them involved in this activity from the very beginning. Once your book is made, have your students draw or trace numbers 1 through 10 on each page. Then, have them draw items such as balls, pets, or smiley faces to correspond with each number. So, if the number is two, they would draw two apples. Have the students decorate with string or ribbon once they are finished and they'll have a nice keepsake.

These are just a few ideas for you to choose from, you can make up your own creative ways to teach math and you will have a lot of fun while teaching. To learn more about this and other math topics, please visit About.com. Thanks for watching.
