Hello. Today, we're going to talk about how to find the median. Now, the median is a type of average and it can be found by looking at the middle value in your set of data. Let's take a look at an example. Suppose you're given the salaries of five random people. What is the median here? To answer that, we first have to arrange this list in increasing order. Notice that 21 is our middle value. It has two numbers to the left of it and two numbers to the right of it. It is therefore the median we've been looking for. Now, what if I give you only four of those salaries? What is the middle value now? Well, it looks like we have two, but there can only be one median and we can find it by working out the mean of 15 and 21 here. To work out the mean, you have to add these two numbers together and divide by 2. So, in this example, our answer is 18 as the median. Why would I be interested in finding the median? Well, in the example of salaries I just gave, if we tried to work out the average as most people would, by finding the mean, we would get 106. Now, that doesn't represent our group of salaries very well because 4 out of 5 of them are less than 106 and so we turn to the median to put it right. So, just to summarize, to find the median, you first have to order your data in increasing order and then look at the middle value. .
