Hi, my name is Bassem Saad. I'm an associate math instructor and a math Ph.D. candidate, and I'm here today for About.com to give you some tips for teaching subtraction. These tips will either help the students understand what subtraction is, or help them memorize simple subtraction expressions. For the first tip, you can give the students a number line. You can either write a number line on the board, or give it to them on their worksheet. Then when you ask them, for example, what's 11, minus six, they can find 11 on the number line and count six spaces back. They can either call out the answer or write it on their worksheet.Tip two: Cut-Outs. This can be a fun arts and crafts activity where the kids start by cutting out some of their favorite shapes, like stars. After they're done, they're ready to subtract. Give them a problem, like eight, minus three. Then the kids can count out eight stars, and take away three. Have them write down the answer: five.Tip three: Flashcards. Have the students write on the front of the flashcard mathematical expressions, like seven, minus two, or nine, minus one. Then on the reverse side, they can write the answer. Once they have these flashcards, they can practice on their own, and when they're ready, they can quiz their neighbor.
So now we've seen some tips for teaching subtraction. Thanks for watching, and to learn more visit us on the web at About.com.
