Hi, I'm Maria Birch and in this video, I'm going to show you how to find the area and perimeter of a parallelogram.

What Is a Parallelogram?

As a reminder, a parallelogram is a quadrilateral with both pairs of opposite sides parallel. To find the area of a parallelogram, you multiply the base of the parallelogram by the height. To find the height, you draw a line from the base to the opposite side and the line must be at a 90-degree angle to the base.

Examples of Using the Formula for Finding Area and Perimeter of a Parallelogram

I'll show you some examples: Lets say you have a parallelogram with a base that's 7 inches long and a height that's 10 inches. The area would equal 7inches times 10 inches, which equals 70 inches squared.Here's another example: if the parallelogram is 8 inches long by 3 inches high, the area would equal 8inches times 3inches, which is equal to 24 inches squared.

Now lets move on to finding the perimeter of a parallelogram. The perimeter is the total distance around the outside of the parallelogram.To calculate the perimeter, we add all four sides together. The formula is written as perimeter equals 2 times the length of the base plus two times the length of the other sides, in this case they're labelled 'C'. As you can see, the formula can be written in various ways that mean the same thing.

Applying the Formula for Finding Area and Perimeter of a Parallelogram

So let's do a couple of examples: if the base of a parallelogram is 7 inches and side 'C' is 10 inches, the perimeter is 2 times 7 plus 2 times 10, which equals 34 inches. So the perimeter is 34 inches.In another example, the base of our parallelogram is 8 inches and side 'C' is 3 inches. So 2 times 8 plus two times 3 is 22. Therefore the perimeter of this parallelogram is 22 inches.
