Hey everyone, David Knupp here for About.com. When teaching children about geometry, tangrams are often used because they are fun and effective aides. A Tangram is a geometric puzzle which originated in China, and is made from three basic geometric shapes. They can be extremely challenging and fun. So today I’m going to show you what a Tangram is and how you can make one.
Tangrams are Made of the Same Puzzle Pieces

A Tangram is a simply a seven part geometric puzzle. It consists of five triangles, a square, and a parallelogram, called tans. They can be made from paper, cardboard, metal, or from many other different materials. The purpose of the Tangram is to organize it into different shapes. The rules for making a Tangram puzzle are simple, you must use all seven tans, they must all touch, and none can overlap. Here I have made a rabbit. Here is an example of a bird, and here I have made a candle. They possibilities are endless.
