Trick or treating without a costume isn't trick or treating, it is just demanding sweets. If someone is going to hand out treats they want to see some effort on the recipients part. Arranging a costume needn't take up a lot of your time or money. Get creative. Include a bowl or box to collect their haul. Give each child a torch or add reflective details to their costumes. This makes sure they are seen, and they will love it!
Halloween is on the 31st of October, and only the 31st of October. Trick or treating on any other day is not permissible. Households will not be prepared and you will make a nuisance of yourselfEarly evening is a good time, and plan to be finished by 8pm. Anytime after that and people may not be so willing to open their doors.
There are no hard and fast age limits to trick or treating. If children are old enough to understand the concept then they will want to take part. But where older children are concerned, remember that having large, unidentifiable teenagers door-stepping for sweets is very intimidating to some people. A teenager chaperoning younger children is a very good way to include them if they don't want to miss out on the fun.Trick or treat in small groups only. And never with more than 5 children. Anymore than this would be overwhelming. There should always be an adult, or trustworthy teenager, with them to supervise.
Stay within your neighbourhood where the children will be on familiar ground. Residents who live in your area and know your children will be more likely to play along.
Give your children a good meal before they leave the house. This will prevent them from gorging on the first treats they are given.Lay down some ground rules. They should stay with their chaperone at all times, and never enter anyone's house or car. Make sure they stick to path ways, and don't go running across lawns or into roads. Practice calling 'Trick or Treat' in unison, and instil into them the importance of saying 'Thank you.'Insist that all children go to the bathroom before they leave the house
There are a daring few who may request a 'trick' rather than handing out a treat. Your children should be ready with a joke, scary face to pull or a simple magic trick to perform. This is not the time to throw eggs at houses and destroy gardens.
If you are not braving the streets have plenty of treats ready for little visitors. Any individually wrapped sweets, lollies or chocolates will always be favourites. For the more health conscious, boxes of raisins, fruit or small gifts such as pencils are a good bet, but you won't be as popular as the candy givers. It is a very bad idea to give money, which is not in the spirit of the tradition at all.Clean your front path of obstacles and leave your porch lights on to encourage trick or treaters. If you really want to go the whole hog why not dress up too, or have some tricks of your own ready? Putting a lighted pumpkin in view, or similar Halloween decoration, will signal you are ready for trick or treaters.
Whether you go out or stay in, have a Happy Halloween!
