Hi, my name is Bassem Saad. I'm an associate math instructor and a math Ph.D. candidate, and I'm here today for About.com to show you how to add doubles. Before we begin, get ten flashcards; if you don't have ten flashcards, just get a blank piece of paper and cut it into ten squares. On the front side of the flashcards, you want to start by writing the mathematical expressions. First, 1 + 1.

On the backside, you can draw objects. You draw one object for the first one -- we'll draw a star; and another object for the next one -- we'll draw a second star. So now you count the number of stars -- one star, two star -- the answer is two.For the next flashcard, we do 2 + 2. So we're going to draw two groups of two stars. The first group is for the number two over here. Then we count out two more stars for the second number. In total, we have one, two, three, four – four stars. So 2 + 2 = 4.So we'll continue this process for the rest of the flashcards until you get to the tenth flashcard; that is, every time you see a number (4 + 4), you want to draw two groups of that number. So you would want to draw four stars in one group, and another four stars in the next group.Once you've finished making flashcards, study them for awhile, and then grab a friend and quiz each other and in no time at all you'll be adding doubles.
