Mark Wahlberg Interview - The Other Guys
Mark Wahlberg thought working with Will was great and that he's
Mark Wahlberg: "Working with Will was great - a hunk of a man. Love the hair, those piercing eyes."
Mark Wahlberg: "No. He didn't have to do any. He just stood there and watched me do it all."
How good at doing improv are you, because we know he likes to go off the script?
Mark Wahlberg: "I've been insulting people since I could talk. That's how I was raised, that's how my family is, and that's all that this consisted of, you know, was ragging on people. I'm actually better at it than all of them."
This is a different kind of movie for you so what's the appeal?
Mark Wahlberg: "I've always wanted to do a comedy. There have been comedic elements in movies that I've done in the past, but I've never done a full-blown comedy. And I was obviously, you know, careful in choosing which one I'd do because coming from a dramatic background, if you tried to do a comedy and it doesn't work, you'd never get a chance to do it again. So having an opportunity to work with these guys who I think are the best at it, they wrote a great part for me and they basically took me under their wing."
Was Will your sort of ideal buddy cop partner?
Mark Wahlberg: "Just in a comedy in general, and then for them to pair us up in this kind of movie, it's so crazy and so absurd that just the idea is really funny."
What was it like to play NYPD? Did you have to train at all?
Mark Wahlberg: "No, I played a cop many times and I've been arrested many times in the past so the cop thing was no problem. It was just really being prepared and being willing to try whatever they asked me to do. And I think coming from the background that I did, you're always a little self-conscious and you want to appear to be cool. And with this there's none of that. You're not going to look cool. Obviously that's why it's so fun and so enjoyable."
Is there a sequel in the works?
Mark Wahlberg: "Oh, I have no idea."
Do you want to get back together with him?
Mark Wahlberg: "Yeah, but I think he's sick of me, man. I think I wore out my welcome because I was really kind of low-key and respectful and shy in the beginning, and then I turned into a crazy person."
How was it working with Eva Mendes?
Mark Wahlberg: "Oh, she's sweet. We worked together in We Own the Night so we were very comfortable. She's always playing somebody else's love interest and I'm just kind of looking at her. Actually in the other movie we did, We Own the Night, that was always an underlying theme for me that my character and my dad's, played by Robert Duvall, had a secret thing for her but obviously the tension between our characters and Joaquin [Phoenix's] character would just bubble under the surface."
