Hi, I'm Lauren Zima for About.com. Grab your stakes because today we're talking about the HBO series, True Blood.Based on a series of novels called The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris, True Blood is a dramatic TV series in which humans, vampires, and other supernatural creatures co-exist. The show premiered September 7th, 2008, and takes place in Bon Temps, Louisiana, shortly after the creation of a synthetic blood replacement by Japanese scientists. That creation leads to vampires coming out of the coffin and seeking equal rights amongst the human population. And that, of course, leads to complications — like discrimination against vampires and the occasional human becoming lunch. The series features a large cast but centers around a core group of characters, including Sookie Stackhouse, a human-fairy hybrid played by Anna Paquin, her brother Jason Stackhouse, her best friend Tara Thornton, and Bill Compton, a handsome vampire who fought in the Civil War. Beyond vampires and fairies, the show also features other supernatural creatures like werewolves, shapeshifters, and witches.Thematically the show tends to mirror a lot of contemporary issues like discrimination, the fight for equal rights, drug addiction, religion, etc. But it always does so with fang planted firmly in cheek — and plenty of silliness and gore to go around. Produced by Alan Ball, the show has won both a Golden Globe and an Emmy. Season 5 wrapped up in August of 2012. Season 6 is slated to start in the summer of 2013.And that's our look at the blood-thirsty world of True Blood. For more information, visit About.com.
