Hi I'm Lauren Zima for About.com and today we're profiling the popular American animated sitcom, The Simpsons.The Simpsons live in the fictional town of Springfield. The show features Homer- the beer loving, unhealthy Father, Marge- the responsible homemaker, Bart- the mischievous underachiever, Lisa- the genius 8-year-old, and Maggie- the cute pacifier loving infant. Together, they live dysfunctionally dealing with different struggles each episode.Matt Groening created The Simpsons and named the town the characters live in after Springfield, Oregon. The show started out as shorts on The Tracey Ullman show. After three seasons, it was developed into the 30 minute show it is today and debuted on prime time television December 17, 1989. That year it was Fox's first series to land in the top 30 series ratings.In 2009, The Simpsons became the longest-running American primetime, scripted television series, passing Gunsmoke. In 2007, The Simpsons Movie hit theaters and grossed more than 527 million dollars.
