Am I too lenient with my teen?
Three Ways to Tell if You're Too Lenient With Your Teen

There are three ways you can tell if maybe you're being too lenient with your teen.

The first thing is does your teenager talk to you like a friend and doesn't take you seriously, even when you're setting a limit? Teenagers are supposed to get mad at you. They are supposed to yell at you. If this isn't happening, then you're probably being too lenient.

The second thing is do you notice if you're getting very angry or very upset when your teenager is mad at you? Then, do you do things or say things immediately, to try to help make the teenager not mad? This isn't good. Sometimes, teenagers get mad at what we do and we can't change that. Part of keeping a teenager safe is setting limits, and they don't always like that.

The third thing is your teenager experiencing depression, bulimia, anorexia, or have a substance abuse problem, and you continue to let them convince you that they can control it? This is not okay. You need to get them help immediately and you are being too lenient.
Notes About Ways to Tell if You're too Lenient With Your Teen

It's hard to know where to draw the line. Teenagers need more room to grow than they did when they were younger. With this, they need more space and they need more room to make decisions. But we can't be too lenient. We still need to set rules and keep them safe.
