Tips for Making Kid- and Mom-Friendly Snacks

Hi, I'm Nancy Newcomer - cook, mom & food blogger with www.NancyNewcomer.com.I'm here today on behalf of About.com to share some Tips & Ideas for Family Friendly Snacks that are healthy, tasty and easy to make. If you're struggling to get your family to eat healthy snacks, here are a few tricks that will have them excited about eating the good stuff.1) Serve food in small or bite-sized pieces. This is visually inviting and encourages eating a variety of good food. Berries, grapes, peaches, oranges, apples, & watermelon balls are all perfect snack choices. This goes for veggies as well: cherry tomatoes, snap peas, bell pepper, celery and carrots are all great choices. Don't forget the protein. Mozzarella balls, cheese cubes, almonds and walnuts - pick your favorites!
2) Use Toothpicks or kabob sticks. Everyone loves building their own kabobs, and kids especially love fruit kabobs. They're fun to make with all the beautiful colors and they're perfect for a healthy treat. Don't forget the toothpicks! Everyone enjoys checking out the snack tray and claiming a tasty bite of their own.3) Make Dips. Okay, I'm not talking about ranch dressing in a bottle here. Healthy & wholesome is more what I had in mind. Now how about some hummus or some guacamole? You can try making Tzatziki - it's a great dip using greek yogurt, fresh cucumbers & dill. Nut butters are also wonderful. You can always count on good old peanut butter, but if you want to venture out into the world of almond and cashew butter, try it. Good Stuff! Another fun one you'll love is greek yogurt with a little honey. It's wonderful for berry dipping.
4) Use Healthy Sprinkles. Have you ever tried sprinkling ground flax seeds into a smoothie or on top of your yogurt? How about chopped up almonds or wheat germ? Chia seeds are wonderful to sprinkle onto a celery stick with almond butter - a new version of "Ants on a Log"--better than raisins because they really do look like ants!5) Be Prepared. Whether you're on a road trip or just an afternoon of errands in the car, there's nothing worse than having a cranky, hungry kid, let alone, a dehydrated, stressed-out mom. Invest in a small, handy cooler with room for a couple of water bottles and small storage containers. This saves the day every time!There are lots of healthy and convenient choices that you can pick up on your weekly trip to the grocery store. How about nitrate-free turkey jerky? I love this stuff! It's perfect for when your blood sugar levels are crashing! How about snack packs of almonds or trail mix? Better yet, make your own ahead of time and store in small Ziplocs. Whole fruits that won't get mushy or too juicy work well in the car - think apples and grapes.
