Hi! I'm Debbie Anderson for About.com!Starting a coin collection can be a fun and rewarding way to spend your time. So, regardless of whether you have a lot of money to spend on a new coin collection or a smaller budget to collect coins, today I'm going to show you a few tips on how to start a coin collection so you can enjoy this great hobby for many years to come!To get started, there are a few items you should always have handy so you can inspect each coin you want to add to your collection. For a basic coin collection, you will need the following supplies: a pair of cloth gloves and a magnifying glass.First, if you are collecting coins that are currently in circulation, always remember to wear fabric gloves and gently hold each coin by the edges of the coin to prevent the oils on your skin from blemishing the surfaces of the coins as you inspect them for the mintage, sharpness of the strike, and color quality under the magnifying glass.Once you have decided on the coins you want to keep, use coin flips, 2x2's, or air tight hard plastic fitted coin holders to store each of the individual coins you want to keep in your collection and these supplies will help preserve each of the coins in your circulated coin collection.Alternatively, if you are trying to collect all the years of a particular coin, coin albums and folders are also a great way to preserve your circulated coin collections. As you continue discovering the coins that you enjoy collecting, you might also wish to start collecting graded certified coins that are in a sealed clear plastic container with the certification label placed above the coin inside the sealed container.
Then, store your certified coins in storage boxes that are specially designed to hold these coin containers to keep both the sealed plastic casing surfaces and the coins in the sealed casings in a safe and organized location. Finally, if you're looking to collect uncirculated or proof coins from the United States Mint, these coins are typically sold on an annual basis and arrive in an already sealed casing from the USMINT.gov website. Once your coins arrive in the mail, always remember to look, but never touch these sealed coins because the original sealed packaging will keep these coins preserved at their highest quality. Now, when it comes to collecting coins, the sky is the limit on the types of coins, the mintage, and the grades of coins you might want to collect, however, the most important thing to remember is that no matter whether you are collecting only highly graded certified coins, or you want to specialize in collecting only coins for a particular mintage, or whatever coins you wish to collect – coin collecting is a fun and exciting hobby that should always be held in a safe and out of the way location, such as in a locked safe. And as an added tip – whenever you have a question about coins, always use books about coins, consult coin shop owners and numismatic specialists, or research the coins you're interested in collecting on the Internet because the prospects and possibilities of this hobby are limitless and this is a hobby that will keep you guessing and learning for the rest of your life!
