Hi! This is Meghan Lynn Allen for About.com, and today I'll share with you some Monopoly strategy ideas.Buy properties. Keep in mind that you want to buy as many properties as you can at the beginning of the game, and have a monopoly on what's in your hands and what you can trade later in the game. Smart purchases include expensive properties like Boardwalk or Park Place. Also, properties that are in the same color theme. You want all three orange, or all three purple. And keep in mind in mind that some properties are landed on more than others. This will give you a heads-up over other players at the table. The most landed-on property in the board game is Illinois Avenue, in addition to Jail. And rounding out the four are B&O Railroad and Go.Be a smart inmate. It's very important to know the ins and outs of jail so you can be one step ahead of everyone else playing the game. It's smart to get out of jail as soon as possible at the beginning of the game, even if you have to pay the $50, because you need to be out there buying properties and being part of the action. Later in the game when you land in jail, it's smarter to stay inside. The more spots you land on when everyone owes properties or hotels, houses, multiple railroads, utilities - you don't want to be landing on those. So stay in jail as long as possible. You can stay there for as long as three rolls, or get out by rolling doubles. You want to build when you have all three or two properties of the same color. Building three houses on each property yields the most money back to you in terms of rent collection. Try to get players to sell you property instead of mortgaging if they owe you money. Heavily mortgaged properties can be bought easily by other players if they land on them. If you're stuck with low-income properties, build quickly up to four houses on each space of property. You can create a building shortage for other players - they won't be able to build. 24 out of 32 houses, and just 6 out of 12 hotels can be tied up on just 6 properties. And finally, be ruthless. When another player is on the brink, don't be afraid to take them all the way out. Fortunes change quickly in Monopoly, and you never know when luck might be on someone else's side. Thanks for watching. To learn more, visit us on the web at About.com.
