How to Save Paper When Teaching With Free Printable Worksheets

Hi! This is Meghan Lynn Allen for About.com, and today we'll discuss how to save paper when teaching with free, printable worksheets.Think about recycled paper. You can start off by buying recycled paper at the store, or using paper from previous projects. Perhaps you have worksheets or assignments that students have used in the past that have a blank side. You can print your new worksheet on that side of the paper. And if you're using new or recycled paper that's completely blank, consider printing on both sides to conserve space. You can also think carefully when shopping for printers. Consider a printer that prints dual-sided, or duplex, copies. There are plenty of ways to think about printing on both sides. When thinking about saving paper when using free printable worksheets, don't just think about the paper you're saving when you're using the worksheet itself. Think about the accessory paper. Lets say you have a printout on dinosaurs, and it's a coloring page. They can use the back of that page to write notes during the class. Don't think just about the worksheet itself, but the additional work they have to do that uses up more paper.Another way to save paper is to use it for more than just the purpose intended. Here is a free, printable worksheet that is the flag of Ecuador. At first glance, it looks like just a coloring page, and certainly you can use it for that. Students can color in the flag with the appropriate colors and you can grade them on it. But you can also use this paper for Ecuadorian facts. Have them put their five favorite facts around the page, and use it as a quiz.
Another way to save paper to make sure you're only printing what's necessary. Often when we print, we get that second page, the little bit of extra graphics or ad or information that we don't need to teach our class. So when you're printing, hit Print Preview, take a look at how many pages are in the document, and only print the first page or whatever's necessary.
