When it comes to backpacks, make sure the bag has two straps, not one. Single strapped bags, like satchels or duffel bags put the entire load on one side of the body. This imbalance strains the back and neck. Go for double straps.
The rule of thumb is simple to remember: the pack should not be larger than your child's back. It should rest 1 to 2 inches below the shoulders and no more than 4 inches below the waistline which is basically your bellybutton. Specially made child sized packs, or packs designed for women fit small children best.
The backpack you choose should be durable but lightweight. The lighter the better - since stress on the back is caused by the weight of your backpack... plus all the stuff you pile into it.
Make sure the two straps on your backpack are nice and cushy. Wide padded straps better distribute the load over the shoulders. A heavily padded back of the pack makes things more comfy as well. If you see a backpack with lumbar support in the padding, even better - it reinforces proper posture.
Lots of pockets do more than just make a backpack look cool. Packing supplies in compartments distributes weight equally and eliminates shifting. All with the added bonus of being able to find what you're looking for in the first place!
