Hi! This is Meghan Lynn Allen for About.com, and today we're discussing what is a book report.A book report is an academic essay or paper, assigned by your teacher or professor, first of all, to check that you've read the book, and whether or not you understood the plot, the author's opinions and if there's some comprehension.Book report content will vary according to grade level. For example, if you're in the middle school level, the book report will start with a summary of the book, a summary of the book, include some student's opinions or thoughts on the book or plot and how it made them feel.As students advance in grade and age level, students will include thoughts about the images, messages and themes in the book, and give their own commentary on them. Often, students will compare and contrast their own life experiences to those of the characters in the book.A book report is generally made up of three parts, the first being an introductory paragraph where you put in the title of the book and the name of the author. Give one or two sentences as a summary of the book, and a thesis statement - the main point of this book or essay. The second, or middle section of the book is called the body, and it may be shorter or longer depending on grade level and your teacher's expectations. This will be an extended summary of the plot, of the book, and you'll talk about your own feelings about the themes and messages and images in the book that you've read.As you finish the body of your book report, it's time for the conclusion, the third and final part of your book report, and sometimes that's one or two paragraphs. And check with your teacher or professor about specific requirements. Some may require that you restate the name and title in your final paragraph. But be sure to ask yourself, did I answer the thesis statement that I put forth in the introductory paragraph? And sometimes it's time to ask a question and give the teacher something to think about. You can jazz up your conclusion by adding in a notable fact about the author, or give your opinion about whether or not you would recommend this book to others. Thanks for watching.
