Hi! This is Meghan Lynn Allen for About.com, and today we'll discuss we'll discuss how to teach students using free, printable worksheets. There are many sites out there that have free, downloadable worksheets, from beginner to advanced levels, from kindergartner to college. But what sites should you be looking for?Start out by seeking educational websites such as abcteach.com or About.com's own homeschooling site. You'll find worksheets for every subject, from math to spelling - and they're free and easy to download. Stay away from sites that ask you to enter personal information, or ask you to download software and purchase it.How do you use these worksheets practically in your classroom? Let's say you're teaching the countries of South America. Why not print out a map? Here's a map with no countries and capitals listed, where - as you're teaching your students about the countries - they can fill in the names of the countries themselves and you can quiz them on them. Here's a worksheet that displays the Statue of Liberty, At first glance, it might just seem like a coloring page and you can certainly use it for that purpose. Your student can color in the Statue of Liberty as an exercise. But you can also use it to get a little more specific. Use this as a mystery - what state has the Statue of Liberty? And can your student write the name on the top of the page? Not every worksheet is meant to have a dual purpose. Here's a worksheet on long division, and another one on handwriting. Each worksheet can be used as an exercise in the classroom, as homework, or as a test. And keep in mind that the worksheet doesn't have to be the main focus. Here's a worksheet on Thanksgiving, another coloring page. But perhaps you'll pair it with a fall activity, an outdoor activity that you're doing with your class. And when you come inside, there's something to round out the day.
