Hi, I am Kathy Moore for About.com. Listening is an important skill that we all need to master. This program will help you teach your children good listening skills.

It can be really frustrating when kids do not listen. As parents whether we are giving advice, asking a question, or handing out a scolding, we have all experienced children who do not seem to hear a word we say.
The Importance of Listening

Poor listening skills do not just create trouble at home - they can cause problems at school and in social situations too.
Read to Kids to Encourage Listening

Reading aloud to young children is one of the best ways to lay a foundation for the listening skills they will need in school. Being read to also increases a child's attention span.
Listen to Kids as an Example

Of course listening is a two way street. As a parent, you need to model good listening behavior for your kids. When your child is talking, be patient and try not to interrupt. Make eye contact and repeat back the important points of what your child says to you.

You can also set an expectation of good listening. If you feel your child has not been paying attention, ask her to repeat what you just said.
Listening During Dinner

Practice listening skills at the dinner table by giving each child the chance to tell a story about their day. Listening together as a family will keep you all more connected.

It is important to remember that listening is a learned behavior. So be patient and encouraging and your kids will become better listeners before your very eyes and ears. Thanks for watching. To learn more, visit us on the Web at About.com.
