Hi, I'm Eva for About.com. Today I am going to be talking about some of the most important Aztec gods and goddesses. The Ancient Aztec worshipped many gods. Each deity ruled or represented part of nature or human existence. The Aztec believed that their gods decided the fate of humanity. To please the gods meant to ensure the Aztec's survival. As such, offerings, worship, and sacrifice were ingrained deeply into Aztec culture. There are four creator gods who play major roles in the Aztec pantheon. They are:The patron god of war and sacrifice. One of the most important of the Aztec gods, it was Huitzilopochtli who told the Aztec where to found Tenochtitlan.Quetzalcoatl was the god of knowledge and learning. His name means "Feathered Serpent" and he was worshiped as a patron of the priests. It is said that Quetzalcoatl was the creator of the Aztec calendar and books.He was the god of the night. His name means "Smoking Mirror" and he was a warrior god, often considered to be the adversary of Quetzalcoatl.Lastly, Xipe Totec, or "Our Lord the Flayed One." He was known as the god of suffering, of the East, and of agricultural fertility.Another of the oldest known and most important of the Aztec gods is Tlaloc, the god of rain. His name means "He Who Makes Things Grow" and he is often associated with agriculture.The wife of Tlaloc was the goddess Chalchiuhtlicue.
