What Is a School Psychologist?
音量
Hi I'm Hollie Hancock, here with About.com to discuss what it takes to become a school psychologist and what is a school psychologist? There has been a growing need for school psychologists. In 2002, U.S. News and World Report named school psychology as one of the top ten "hot professions." And in my opinion, school psychologists are so needed and so valuable. So you may be asking yourself, what does a school psychologist do? School psychologists work with students and groups of students to deal with academic planning, difficulties, behavioral problems, disabilities, and personal issues.Other tasks may include training for faculty and parents on how to manage crisis situations or substance abuse problems. On a personal note, when I was in High School a very good friend of mine was killed in a car accident and there were other students involved in that accident, which sent a ripple throughout our school in terms of trauma and loss, grief - you name it.So for a couple of weeks after this accident, we had school psychologists on campus all the time to help those who might have been struggling with the impact of this death, or deaths, as the case was, of the students in our class. Not to mention, if we had a class together with an individual who was involved in that accident, school psychologists were in the classroom, ready to help us and ask questions about how we were doing and if we needed to talk. So I thought that it was very helpful and again very valuable to have a school psychologist. While most school psychologists work in elementary and secondary school settings, school psychologists may also find employment in private clinics, hospitals, state agencies, and universities. In terms of schooling, a minimum of 2-3 years of graduate school are typically required to work as a school psychologist. I will say this again: be sure to check with your state regarding the requirements for becoming a licensed school psychologist. Being a school psychologist can be a challenging career, but extremely fulfilling and rewarding as well. Faculty, students, parents, and even communities at large may benefit from your expertise and training. Really, I don't think school psychologists know how valuable they can be in the schools and in the communities.
Thanks for watching. I hope you got some good information about what it takes to become a school psychologist. If you need more information, visit About.com.
