Hi, I am Kari Britton, registered nurse, here today with About.com Health, and I am going to talk to you about the Sugar Busters diet. This diet was made popular by the book "Sugar Busters: Cut the Sugar to Trim Fat" written by H. Leighton Steward and a group of medical doctors, that became very popular in late 1998. The Sugar Busters diet is based on the premise that too much sugar consumption leads to insulin release, which some doctors and nutritionist believe leads to weight gain, and other dangerous and fatal health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, massive heart attacks and or strokes. The Sugar Busters book and diet suggests that it is sugar and other complex carbohydrates, or all foods that are "white" in color such as white pasta, white bread, and white rice, even some dense fruits, are unhealthy and banned on the Sugar Busters diet. In the last 25 years there have been numerous books suggesting that carbohydrates are not healthy for anyone to consume, whether you are young or old. Therefore, the book and diet was an enormous success and became a very popular diet. The Sugar Busters diet promotes the consumptions of whole foods, not highly processed foods, only 100% whole wheat grains and pastas, brown rice, sugarless sauces, jams, and it practically eliminates raw white sugar from the diet completely. This also includes honey, brown sugar and using very limited amounts of artificial sweeteners. Sugar Busters diet also encourages eating some healthy fats such as olive oils and peanut oil, and removing all hydrogenated and palm oils usually found in processed foods like high caloric sugar snacks and fat free foods high in sugar. The plan also guides you on how to prepare and how much to consume of broiled, not fried, lean meats, fish, fruits from the berry family, and non-starchy vegetables. Also, high protein, low fat dairy products, and some seeds and nuts are allowed. Also, you can eat an abundance of salads with sugar-free dressings or just fresh lemon juice. Beware of condiments like low fat salad dressings, as they could be full of sugar. Also, ketchup and mayonnaise are high in sugar and fat. This is the basic concept of the Sugar Busters diet.
