How to Stop Overstriding When Running
音量
Hi, I'm Cate Ganiere for About.com. This video is based on Christine Luff's article, "Common Running Mistakes to Avoid."Overstriding is one of the most common mistake that runners make. New runners may be inclined to think they can increase efficiency by taking longer strides. While it makes sense that longer strides will reduce the number of times you hit the ground on your way to the intended destination, you aren't necessarily helping yourself run more efficiently. And more importantly, you are increasing the risk of injury by doing so. Normally, you should be hitting the ground with the middle of your foot, but by extending your stride, you will hit the ground on your heel. This can actually have a reverse effect on your body, as the heel will act almost like a brake on each step.Let's take a look at two examples. In this example, the runner is over striding. The legs are overextending, the foot is landing in front of the body and the heel is hitting the ground first. Now take a look at a good example. The leg is not overextending, the foot is landing below the body, which has a slight forward lean, and the foot hits the ground in the middle. To fix over striding, it will help to focus on landing on the mid-soles of your feet. To get a feel for this, you can try stepping up and down in place. An even more effective way to correct over striding will be to focus on maintaining proper posture with your back straight and a slight forward lean. This will naturally cause your feet to land underneath your body or center of gravity. Make sure this slight forward lean does not turn into a forward slouch. Correct posture will also help you to naturally keep your legs slightly bent and avoid full extension. Make sure you don't overcompensate and begin landing on your toes, as this will overuse your calf muscles. Focus on these things and you will enjoy your running even more. Thanks for watching at About.com
