Hi, I'm JJ Virgin of JJ Virgin.com, Nutrition & Fitness Expert, and I'm here today with About.com to share with you my favorite low-carb substitutions. What you'll find when you're going from high-carb to low-carb is that usually means getting rid of those starchy vegetables and replacing them with non-starchy vegetables, or getting rid of those high sugar foods and replacing them with either healthy fat foods or high protein foods. So let me show you what I'm talking about. Let's take an all-American favorite: chips. So you can take your chips – crunch, crunch, crunch – and replace them with celery. You'll get that same crunch but save a load of calories.Next one that I love is pasta. Now pasta you can top it with a marinara sauce, you can top it with olive oil and chunky tomatoes, but whichever way you do that, you're going to get a lot of carbs from the pasta. You won't even notice the difference if you cut open a spaghetti squash, boil it or bake it and then shred off the threads. Tastes just like spaghetti but it's a non-starchy vegetable. So you're going to get loads of nutrition without the carbs.Next thing, like mashed potatoes? Dump those and trade them over for mashed cauliflower. And the nice thing with cauliflower is it's rich in something called sulforaphane and that's great for your health - it's detoxifying. Now, if you are a jam fan, trade this jam and switch over to almond butter. And this is a great thing to put on celery sticks. Because now you've got a little low-carb treat. Next thing is yogurt. Greek-style yogurt here is high in protein and low in carbs. But when you trade it for one of the sugary yogurts you can get as much as 25 grams of sugar. That's like drinking a soda with your yogurt. And milk, take the milk and trade it for coconut milk. Not only are you going to save the carbs but coconut milk has something called medium chain triglycerides in it - it actually helps you burn fat. And finally ketchup – now here's a trade that actually is going to taste a lot better too. You can take this ketchup which is loaded with sugar, and trade it for salsa. And you're going to actually put a little zip on your metabolism with the salsa because of those little spicy herbs. Thanks for watching and to learn more, visit us online at About.com.
