Tips for Getting a Thai Massage
If you've never had a Thai massage, be prepared to be surprised -- it's
Hi, I'm Missy Anderson, licensed massage therapist and owner of Barefoot Body Works in San Luis Obispo, California. I'm here for About.com today to give you some tips on getting a Thai massage. While originating in India about 2,500 years ago, this massage technique was refined in Thailand over the next several centuries, eventually making its way west. Let's take a closer look. People who have experienced a Thai massage often equate it to a yoga session, minus the hard work; in fact, it may have been referred to as a Thai yoga massage. While this type of massage can be performed on a raised massage bed, it's more often practiced on a thick, well-cushioned floor mat. Your massage therapist will use her hands, feet, knees, and legs to work various areas of the body into what is best described as yoga-inspired stretches. Typically, the minimum Thai massage is one hour because there's so much ground to cover and the process is so intricate. However, you can also find massage therapists who will schedule two-hour massage sessions if desired. If you've never had a Thai massage, be prepared to be surprised -- it's rejuvenating, relaxing, and refreshing. Your massage therapist will simultaneously use her hands and feet to massage and apply pressure. She will also use her knees and legs to stabilize the body, which may feel a little like being pinned down. Be aware that it is a much different experience than other types of massage, with quite a bit more physical contact between you and the massage therapist. Before you get started, your massage therapist will want to review your health history with you. You'll most likely be asked to fill out a medical questionnaire, on which you should disclose any pertinent issues including injuries. As your massage therapist will be using her feet directly on your body, rest assured that she will perform a grooming regimen prior to getting started.Unlike other types of massage, no oil will be used in the administering of the Thai massage. In fact, you'll remain fully clothed throughout the whole thing, so choose loose-fitting garments that are easy to move around in. Yoga or stretch pants and a loose t-shirt or tank top are good options. There's nothing like a Thai massage to alleviate stress and leave you feeling balanced. Thanks for watching.
