Body Mass Index or “BMI” is a calculation of your child's weight and height for age. This number helps determine if your child is at a healthy weight or an unhealthy weight.The number is plotted on a graph that that has BMI for age. One graph is for girls ages 2 to 18 years, and the other is for boys ages 2 to 18 years. There are four possible categories for the calculation: Underweight (< 5th%); Healthy weight (5th%-85th%); Overweight (86th%-95th%); Obese (> 95th%). There is a formula to calculate the BMI:If you want to calculate the BMI online, go to www.pediatrics.about.com and type in BMI in the search bar. Then click on the BMI formula and enter your child's sex, age, weight and height.So how is BMI used? BMI is a helpful tool to determine if a child between the ages of 2 and 18 years is at a healthy weight or if the child is underweight or overweight. Ideally the number should be calculated at the yearly check-up.Ask your pediatrician about your child's BMI. You may be surprised to find out the answer, but there are guidelines as to how to deal with the answer if the weight is not healthy.
